religious gifts

goldcrossI’m Catholic, and it’s tradition that when you celebrate a Baptism, a First Communion, or a Confirmation, that you give either money, or a religious gift. It’s not the time to give someone a new outfit, shoes, stuffed animals, toys, etc. Those rites of passage are sacred, and the gift should reflect the occasion. My niece is making her Confirmation this Sunday, and my son makes his First Holy Communion in May, so suffice to say, I will be well acquainted with any type of Catholic gifts that one could possible find by that time.

When my daughters made their First Communions, we went to a local Catholic supply store and bought each girl a small bible, rosary, and case. My mom got each of my daughters a gold necklace and rosary. We’ll probably carry on that tradition with my son in May, and we’ll probably give me niece money.

If you’re invited to celebrate one of these ceremonies and you’re not Catholic, play it safe and give cash, or make a trip to the local Catholic church. Usually, they have a small store and a selection of appropriate gifts.
